Jaffer Group has been a pioneer in the Pakistani agro business. Its main focus has been, beyond the strong presence of the Group in the supply of pesticide, to import fertilizer and to provide consultancy services to farmers, helping them in enhancing their output.

Years of working experience with the farming community has helped the Group in identifying new solutions fitting the evolving requirement of this community and of the country at large; like Drip Irrigation. We have access to the most appropriate modern technology for cost effective services, and have developed the required expertise to give reliable services to farmers.

Drip Irrigation Project

The recognition of the importance of water management at Government level, as the need of the day, has led to diverse initiatives at Federal and Provincial level. Projects like high efficiency irrigation systems, rehabilitation of canal system and improvement of water course etc. have taken shape due to recommendation framed by Inter-provincial committee. From 1960 to 1976, the Government of Pakistan focused on water management by constructing dams like Tarbela and Mangla, as a result of which the water withdrawal has increased from canals by an impressive 58 percent - from 67 million to 106 million acre feet (MAF).

Since then - a period of 30 years - no major water storage project was undertaken while the gross storage capacity at the Chashma, Mangla and Tarbela reservoirs was depleted by 4.9 MAF by 2004. It is estimated that by 2013, the three reservoirs will lose a storage capacity of 6.4 MAF.

This decline in the availability of water will occur while the country's population will continue to increase, driving Pakistan towards a serious water shortage. In 1951, the surface water availability per capita for irrigation was estimated at 5,650 cubic meters; this has declined to only 1,350 cubic meters per head in 2002.

Pakistan is heading towards an availability of per capita below 1000 cubic meters which is what experts describe as a "water short country." By 2012, Pakistan will have reached the stage of "acute water shortage." With an obvious impact on the availability of food for an increasingly large population. For sustainable agriculture in Pakistan, a significant improvement of the quality of water management has become paramount, and we are committed to playing an active role in the promotion of technologies allowing the farming community to face this vital challenge.

Why Drip Irrigation:

Pakistan's economy remains widely dependant on agriculture. In Pakistan, land and climate are very conducive to grow good quality crops, but we have not been able to increase yield and quality of crops to their potential. For many years no significant yield increase could be achieved, whereas there is a continuous demand for food due to an increase in population.

Hence at this point in time, we need to introduce and develop such technologies that not only save water but also can significantly increase yield and productivity of all major agri-inputs. Drip Irrigation is the best solution to address the situation.

What is Drip Irrigation?
In Drip Irrigation, water and fertilizers are applied through special pipes, at a precise flow rate, near the plant roots as per plant need basis. In this system, the soil near the roots is always kept at "field capacity" which enables the crop to easily capture all the required water and nutrients, and grow healthier. Water is applied so close to the plants that it reaches only the area of the soil where the roots grow. Drip Irrigation is unlike other traditional methods which involve the moisturizing of whole soil profile.

Contrary to the traditional methods of irrigation, in which water is applied in large quantities at long intervals resulting initially in saturation of soil followed by moisture stress, drip irrigation applies water in small quantity on a daily basis to maintain favorable moisture level in soil in which the plant can flourish.

Benefits of Drip Irrigation

Benefits of Drip Irrigation
As discussed before, Drip Irrigation is about the precise delivery of water, nutrients and chemicals directly in to the root zone to give a level of control over soil environment. This delivers a remarkable set of benefits:

• Enhanced crop yield
• Improved quality
• Reduce water consumption
• Increased irrigation efficiency
• Controlled use of fertilizer on crop growth basis
• Lesser infestation of diseases
• Lesser weed growth
• Labor saving
• Intercultural operations are easy during irrigation
• Better control over harvest time and market timing
• Saving in energy in tube well irrigated land
• No need for land leveling - better utilization of uneven terrain
• Suitable for all types of soils
• No problem of water logging and salinity
• No problem of soil erosion

Drip Irrigation in the world
Development of the Drip Irrigation system has been widely successful in America, Australia, Middle East and countries in Southern Europe. Asian countries like China and Thailand are developing markets for this technology and are receiving increased attention from major players. India has a strong local industry dominated by one widely integrated player with more global ambition - Jain Group.

Through the introduction of a high efficiency irrigation system, we want to help farmers to increase their productivity and effective use of water. Our teams will work with farmers to design the optimal installation in its specific condition and advise him to extract the whole range of benefits in term of water saving and yields, as well as saving of other inputs like energy, fertilizer or pesticides.
